Zahrah Mahmood is a Scottish Pakistani Muslim woman who was born and brought up in Glasgow. She works as a Chartered Accountant Monday-Friday, but in the evenings and on weekends she heads to the mountains to embrace her passion for hillwalking. She documents these adventures on her Instagram page where she is known as “The Hillwalking Hijabi” where she hopes that by sharing her experiences outdoors, she can encourage and motivate anyone and everyone, but especially women like her, to get outside and enjoy the outdoors too.

Alongside the beautiful mountain images that she posts, Zahrah is also know for speaking out about injustice where she sees it, particularly when it comes to her own and others experiences around race and religion. It is her honesty and transparency around these subjects, as well as around the psychological challenges and benefits of being in the outdoors that have inspired so many others too.

In this conversation, we talk about what motivated Zahrah to take up hillwalking, some of the challenges she has faced and the benefits she personally has experienced from her adventures outdoors as well.
