The adventure of becoming an author - Joyce Osei

Joyce Osei is a business analyst and champion for diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Her career has seen her working in global publishing companies, as well as working with clients across a wide range of industry sectors. Earlier this year, she published her first children's book ‘The Adventures of Amma and Kwessi - In Barbados’ and it is her journey to becoming a published author, that this episode is focused on.

Joyce took the decision to write the book when she realised that there were just as many problems with diversity and representation in children’s literature as there are in the workplace. Noting the absence of any characters that looked like her children in the stories she read to them - and nobody stepping forward to fill that void - she took the brave decision to do this herself. Basing the stories on her and her family's own  experiences (with a magical twist!), she hopes that the characters and ideas that she has  developed will inspire other children to head out on their own adventures to.

In this episode, Joyce speaks openly about the journey from the initial spark of the idea to seeing her book in print earlier this year. The challenges she faced from shifting her mindset to seeing herself as a writer, to the practicalities of navigating a new field with no previous experience, will resonate with anyone who has decided to embark on a new adventure, where the journey is as life-changing as the end result.
